On September 10, 2025, Ecuador achieved a historic export milestone: one million fresh roses arrived in China after only three days of transit. Ambassador María Soledad Córdova announced via the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that the successful shipment was made possible through public-private coordination between the Ecuadorian government, national flower growers, and JD Flowers, the floral division of China’s e-commerce platform JD.com.

The shipment was facilitated by the Free Trade Agreement between China and Ecuador, in force since 2024, which removed tariffs on Ecuadorian flowers destined for the Chinese market. The logistics model employed, air transport with specialized temperature control and optimised transit routes, ensured the flowers’ freshness upon arrival, offering a competitive edge for local producers.

JD Flowers leveraged the occasion of Qixi Festival, the Chinese version of Valentine’s Day celebrated on August 29, to spotlight Ecuadorian roses. The platform projects selling over 100 million imported flowers in 2025 from Ecuador, Colombia, the Netherlands, and Japan. This opens significant export potential for Ecuador’s floral sector toward Asian markets with strong demand.

Additionally, this event sets a precedent for diversifying Ecuador’s agricultural exports to China: Ambassador Córdova noted that other products such as blueberries, asparagus, broccoli, and proteins are being considered for entry into the Chinese market. This push leans on the existing FTA and improvements in national logistics chains.
