According to an article from Infobae, on Monday, May 26, 2025, the governments of Uruguay and the People’s Republic of China held a bilateral meeting in the city of Montevideo, where they discussed the development of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

This meeting was a high-level event, with the South American country represented by its head of state, President Yamandú Orsi, who was accompanied by his government’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mario Lubetkin.

On the side of the People’s Republic of China, the delegation was led by the Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, He Baoxing, along with a commission from the General Directorate of Latin America and the Caribbean of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

It is worth mentioning that this is not the first high-level meeting. In March of this year, President Orsi held a meeting with the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, Han Jun, where they discussed bilateral relations between the Asian country and Uruguay, as well as international issues of common interest for the Latin America and Caribbean region.

Similarly, within the framework of the “China-CELAC Forum,” held in Beijing on May 13 and 14, 2025, Chancellor Lubetkin represented the Uruguayan government. It is also important to highlight that next year the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) will be led by Uruguay.

During this international forum in the capital of the Asian country, Chancellor Lubetkin gave a speech in which he stated that there is currently “a dangerous erosion of multilateralism in an extremely complex context.”

Likewise, Lubetkin emphasized that it is vital for the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, together with the People’s Republic of China, to work jointly to “positively contribute to peace and international security, cooperation, free trade, and sustainable development, including the elimination of poverty and the reduction of inequality.”
