Peru’s Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri) confirmed that the first official pecan export to the People’s Republic of China has been carried out, consisting of 25 tons certified by the National Agricultural Health Service (Senasa). The certification ensures compliance with the phytosanitary protocols required by China’s General Administration of Customs (GACC), including the absence of quarantine pests such as Oiketicus kirbyi and Aleurodicus dispersus.
This shipment marks a milestone for small and medium producers in San Juan Bautista, Ica, who have been seeking access to the Chinese pecan market for years. According to Minister Ángel Manero, last November Peru secured formal access to this market, and now producers are realizing that potential.
Over 3,700 hectares in Peru are planted with pecan trees, mainly in Ica, followed by Chincha, Pisco, Huaral, Huaura, Barranca, Cañete, and Arequipa. Most of the production is done by family farmers, and there are 10 authorized packing facilities located predominantly in Ica and Chincha.
Beyond opening a new export destination, this first pecan shipment adds diversity to Peru’s agricultural export portfolio, which already sends strawberries, fresh grapes, and avocados to China. These products collectively represent over USD 420 million in agricultural imports from Peru.
Vilma Gutarra, national head of Senasa, emphasized that this achievement does more than diversify export products: it improves market entry opportunities for small farmers, now able to ship pecans both in shell and shelled, expanding possible trade channels.
This progress stems from around eight years of joint public-private efforts, including phytosanitary access policies, producer training, and technical support. If favorable conditions and logistical capacity persist, shipments are expected to increase in volume in the coming years.
