Nicaragua’s National Assembly approved two credit agreements between the government and the Chinese firm Iconic Technology Company Limited, amounting to 923 million yuan, over 126 million U.S. dollars. The financing will support the expansion and modernization of the Julia Herrera de Pomares Logistics Center, located at the Port of Corinto.
The initiative is intended to enhance Nicaragua’s logistical, transport, and communications infrastructure and aligns with the government’s broader strategy to position the country as a key regional logistics hub. The legislative proposal was submitted by the Office of the President and backed in plenary session by Deputy Wálmaro Gutiérrez, who chairs the Assembly’s Commission on Production, Economy, and Budget.
Gutiérrez noted that the project is consistent with the national Constitution and the Human Development Plan. He added that the legislature had previously approved funding for the center’s initial construction and that this new phase will include a national counterpart contribution, made possible through Nicaragua’s fiscal efforts.
“Fighting poverty requires significant resources,” Gutiérrez said. “This investment aims to establish Nicaragua as a first-class regional logistics node.” First Vice President of the National Assembly, Arling Alonso, also emphasized that the project is part of broader government efforts to improve living standards for the population.
