At the China International Fruit Expo in Shanghai, Frutas de Chile entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Kunming Haiguangxing Market Operation and Management Co., Ltd., the key wholesale fruit market operator in Yunnan. This agreement aims to position Kunming as a hub for distributing fresh Chilean fruit throughout southern China and Southeast Asia via Tier 3 and 4 cities, where demand for high-quality imports is expanding.
Iván Marambio, president of Frutas de Chile, hailed the agreement as a strategic milestone in market diversification. He noted the enhanced presence for premium fruits; cherries, grapes, plums, and blueberries, in less accessible regions, and emphasized efforts to maintain promotional activities and consumer outreach even during off-season.
Representatives from Kunming highlighted the agreement’s role in promoting Chilean fruits, especially cherries, through their platform, particularly ahead of the Lunar New Year, when demand peaks.
Claudia Soler, Executive Director of Frutas de Chile’s Cherry Committee, remarked that the MoU aligns with a broader strategy of diversifying China’s market exposure beyond traditional distribution channels.
The MoU defines clear objectives: expanding market share and visibility, optimizing the supply chain for freshness and quality, and establishing regular data exchanges on production, pricing, consumption trends, and sanitary regulations. The agreement also includes provisions for reciprocal visits, joint participation at industry events, and annual review meetings.
This initiative reflects the deepening trade relationship between Chile and China, where Chilean cherries and other fruits are increasingly valued for their quality and traceability.
