October 12 marked the approval in the Uruguayan House of Representatives of the treaty between the People's Republic of China and the Oriental Republic of Uruguay on Extradition, among other issues that were addressed during the plenary session.

Several other countries in the region have already signed such treaties. In 2019, the president of Colombia, Iván Duque, signed the treaty for the repatriation of Colombian prisoners in China, a step that the president described as an "important advance" in judicial cooperation. Meanwhile, in 2018, Panama and China signed 19 agreements on economic, trade, development cooperation and an extradition treaty, on the occasion of the visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping. Peru, on the other hand, signed the "Treaty between the Republic of Peru and the People's Republic of China on Extradition" in 2001.
