On Thursday, February 20, 2024, three bulls were airlifted from Uruguay to the People's Republic of China. These bulls, of the Hereford, Angus, and Braford breeds, were a gift from President Luis Lacalle Pou, who sent two bulls to President Xi Jinping, and from the Minister of Livestock, Agriculture, and Fisheries, Fernando Mattos, who sent one to his Chinese counterpart.
The main motivation behind this gift was to make a symbolic gesture representing the potential for Uruguayan genetic exports to the Asian country. Uruguay aims to become a supplier of livestock genetics in the near future, with the goal of contributing to the development of cattle breeding and genetic improvement in China.
Upon arrival in China, the bulls will be sent to research and genetic dissemination centers, according to the Chinese government. For this reason, prior to their entry, they underwent various tests required by China’s export protocol.
The announcement of this gift was made in November 2023, when the Uruguayan president, during an official visit to China, stated that he would send two bulls to Xi Jinping as a token of friendship and in commemoration of the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
