Peru's Minister of Transport, Raúl Pérez Reyes, and China’s Minister, Liu Wei, signed two memoranda of understanding in Lima to cooperate on port infrastructure, maritime security, transport digitalization, and carbon reduction in maritime transport. The signing took place on the eve of the inauguration of the Chancay mega-port, built by the Chinese company Cosco Shipping, with the presence of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The first memorandum establishes a framework for cooperation in strategic areas such as road, port, and rail infrastructure, as well as maritime safety and logistics. The second agreement focuses on reducing carbon intensity and improving energy efficiency in maritime transport, aligning with the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) 2023 Strategy. This agreement also aims to develop a "green corridor" to promote sustainability in maritime transport.

During the meeting, Cosco Shipping’s Chairman Zhu Tao presented Pérez Reyes with a scale model of a ship that will dock in Chancay and bear the name "Peru," highlighting its symbolic importance. Pérez Reyes emphasized that the port will enable direct exports to China on large vessels, reducing shipping time to 21 days and marking a significant milestone for Peru's maritime transport.
