Paraguay and Taiwan signed the third disbursement of funds for the construction of approximately 900 new housing units for indigenous peoples in Paraguay.

On Monday, April 22, the third payment of US $2.4 million was made for the construction of 862 new housing units for indigenous communities as the result of a cooperation project between the Paraguayan Foreign Ministry and the Taiwanese Ambassador in the South American country.

The project has a total budget of approximately US $12 million. This third installment of the payment guarantees the continuity of the project, which seeks to improve the quality of life of vulnerable peoples, offering them a safe and dignified place to live.

Paraguay is the last country in South America, and one of the few countries in the world, to continue its diplomatic relationship with Taiwan, together with Belize and Guatemala in Central America. The most recent regional diplomatic rupture took place with the government of Honduras in March 2023, which opted to officially recognise the People’s Republic of China instead.

Paraguay and Taiwan share a strong relationship, one built on a wide range of support for livestock exports, investments in technology and infrastructure, among other areas of interest to both countries.

Therefore, this agreement for the development of new housing units is key for bilateral relations. As stated by Foreign Minister Rubén Ramirez, “this occasion highlights the essential role of cooperation with Taiwan to achieve our sustainable development goals and promote the welfare of our citizens. And, above all, I want to emphasize that this is another occasion to deepen, reinforce, strengthen the bonds of friendship between Paraguay and Taiwan”.

During the ceremony, it was also emphasized that this financial aid would be destined especially to the construction of homes for mothers who are heads of households that are part of these native peoples.
