Nicaragua’s beef sector reached a new milestone with the first shipment of beef from Industrial Comercial San Martín to China, a cargo that exceeded 21,000 kilograms bound for Shanghai port. The operation reflects the growing dynamism of trade relations between the two countries and consolidates beef as one of Nicaragua’s main export products.

This shipment adds to the 36 consignments already carried out by different national companies since the opening of the Chinese market in 2021, when Managua and Beijing established diplomatic relations. With San Martín’s incorporation, three Nicaraguan slaughterhouses now have access to the Chinese market: Nica Beef Packers, Novaterra S.A., and San Martín.

The company emphasized that this opening represents an opportunity for diversification in a highly competitive market with increasing demand for animal protein. For the Government of Nicaragua, the agreement reinforces its strategy of expanding exports to Asia, strengthening global food security, and generating foreign exchange that contributes to domestic economic development.

The Institute for Agricultural Protection and Health (IPSA) has played a crucial role in this process, ensuring that processing plants comply with strict international standards of quality, safety, and traceability. These audits have been decisive in gaining the trust of Chinese buyers and opening a door that, according to analysts, could transform Nicaragua’s positioning in the international beef market.

The livestock sector is currently the second most important economic driver in the country, only behind coffee. In 2024, beef production exceeded 358 million pounds (162 million kilograms), consolidating Nicaragua as a reliable exporter in Central America.

San Martín’s entry into the Chinese market not only expands the country’s export capacity but also strengthens the strategy of diversifying destinations and reducing dependence on traditional markets. China, with more than 1.4 billion inhabitants, represents a unique opportunity for Nicaraguan producers who aspire to consolidate a sustained and long-term commercial flow.
