According to a report by the outlet TeleSur, Eduardo Escobar, Executive Secretary of the National Commission for the Transformation and Development of Coffee Growing (Conatradec), stated that the groups from Matagalpa and Madriz, together with technicians from the Institute for Agricultural Health and Protection (IPSA), formalized the export of a shipment to China. This is because both organizations are already recognized by Chinese customs authorities.

It is known that the coffee shipment will be sent this Friday, May 9, and will contribute to the consolidation of foreign trade for the Central American country. Likewise, Secretary Escobar noted that the negotiation to finalize the shipment was led by a cooperative, resulting in the first export certified by Chinese customs.

Additionally, the secretary emphasized that Conatradec is supporting the development of a virtual platform aimed at providing various types of assistance to coffee producers and exporters in Nicaragua.

He also mentioned that this initial shipment will not be the only one, as around 13 containers of Nicaraguan coffee are expected to be exported to the city of Shanghai throughout the current month and in the coming weeks. He further reported that coffee prices in China are already known and range between 176 and 1,500 dollars per quintal.

On another note, the Executive Secretary of Conatradec stated that the 2024–2025 harvest was successful, resulting in an increase in the country's productive area. Specifically, he mentioned an increase of 10,000 manzanas, from 196,000 in 2024 to 206,000 this year.

In that regard, Escobar highlighted that this expansion represents approximately 300,000 additional quintals, which would imply a growth of nearly 8% compared to the previous harvest. This would result in higher productivity per cultivated manzana, partly due to the international context.

He also pointed out that in April 2024 the market price dropped to a low of 220 dollars, whereas it currently stands between 376 and 400 dollars. Since May of last year, the price has consistently remained above 300 dollars.

According to Conatradec, Nicaraguan coffee exports are expected to close the current year with a total of 650 million dollars. Moreover, the institution stated it is focused on implementing risk management mechanisms to protect local producers from market fluctuations.

Similarly, the institution emphasized that the value of exports should not be the only priority; instead, importance should lie in how that capital is redistributed throughout the entire coffee production chain in the country. It also stressed the need to address the challenges posed by climate change across all sectors and the crucial role of social cohesion and organization within the coffee sector for its proper development.

It also mentioned that certifications confirming the quality of Nicaraguan coffee beans, such as phytosanitary certifications and registered trademarks in coordination with the Ministry of Development, Industry, and Trade (MIFIC), are key to the development of coffee production and exports.

Last but not least, Conatradec noted that other certifications, such as those related to fair trade, add value during the coffee negotiation process, since in addition to the standard procedures, sensory mapping is used to track and assess the quality of the beans according to their place of origin.
