This Monday, Nicaraguan authorities inaugurated the Confucius Institute at the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua (UNAN-Managua), as part of the reestablishment of diplomatic relations between Nicaragua and the People's Republic of China.

The ceremony was attended by several important figures, including Laureano Ortega Murillo, son of President Daniel Ortega and Vice President Rosario Murillo; Ramona Rodríguez, President of the National Council of Universities (CNU) and Dean of UNAN-Managua; Zhou Yi, Chargé d'Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Managua; and Tang Jiahua, President of the Council of Kunming University of Science and Technology.

During the event, Rodríguez emphasized that the Confucius Institute will play a fundamental role in teaching the Chinese language and promoting cultural and educational exchanges between Nicaragua and China. According to Rodriguez, this inauguration represents a significant advance in the country's educational sphere and is aligned with Nicaragua's national education strategy.

Rodriguez explained that this strategy seeks to prepare young people with an “education for life”, focused on values and scientific and technical knowledge that can be applied for the benefit of the Nicaraguan people. She also stressed that the Confucius Institute will be open to all Nicaraguans interested in learning Chinese and as well as learning about the culture, with the aim of strengthening ties with the Asian nation.

In recent months, Nicaragua and China have strengthened their relationship considerably. Both countries have established a new maritime route, held joint trade conferences, and Nicaraguan exports to China in the first half of this year increased by 80% compared to the same period last year.

The creation of this institute comes after the resumption of diplomatic relations between Nicaragua and China, formalized in December 2021, when the Central American country decided to break official ties with Taiwan. This diplomatic change reflects Nicaragua's interest in strengthening its relations with China, which considers Taiwan part of its territory.
