On December 9 last year, Nicaragua's President Daniel Ortega broke off diplomatic relations with Taiwan in order to reestablish them with the People's Republic of China (PRC). For this new stage, the Vice President of Nicaragua, Rosario Murillo, informed on June 1st of this year that the PRC has appointed "Chen Xi" as new Resident Ambassador and Plenipotentiary in Nicaragua. This announcement was also released by the Nicaraguan Foreign Ministry through a statement on its official website.

Chen Xi was Ambassador of the PRC in Cuba and ended his diplomatic mission in June 2021. He was also decorated by the Cuban Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, and was a member of the Political Bureau of Cuba's Central Committee of the Communist Party. Meanwhile, Rosario Murillo announced that Nicaragua has appointed Orlando José Gómez Zamora as Ambassador to the PRC. Gómez Zamora was removed from his post as Ambassador to the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and transferred to his new post in the PRC.
