With an investment of $500 million, the construction of a modern infrastructure is expected to accommodate 3.5 million passengers and 35,000 flights annually. This project, managed by the Chinese company CAMCE, is part of the international Belt and Road Initiative, aimed at connecting various countries commercially with the People’s Republic of China (PRC).

The Punta Huete International Airport will be equipped to handle large aircraft, such as the Boeing 747 and AN-124, and will feature a logistical system that includes the construction of a railway and a port in Bluefields. This initiative will enhance Nicaragua's competitiveness by opening new trade routes to Europe and Asia, fostering commerce, and driving economic development in the region.

The terminal, located in San Francisco Libre, a municipality in the department of Managua, will incorporate sustainable technology by including solar panels that will supply 21% of the airport's energy needs, thereby reducing the reliance on fossil fuels.
