Mexico raises tariffs on Chinese imports, sparking Beijing’s response

The Mexican government unveiled a plan to raise import tariffs up to 50% on goods from countries without free trade agreements, with Chinese products bearing the brunt. The proposal, pending congressional approval, is aimed at protecting Mexico’s automotive, textile, and steel industries.

Passenger cars face the steepest hikes, with duties rising from the current 15-20% to 50%. Other categories like steel, textiles, and apparel would also be affected. While the policy does not explicitly mention China, it disproportionately impacts Chinese exports.

China’s embassy in Mexico responded sharply, calling the move “coercive” and warning it would take “necessary measures” to safeguard its interests. President Claudia Sheinbaum denied the tariffs specifically target China, pledging to meet with Chinese diplomats next week to clarify Mexico’s stance.

The decision comes amid pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump, who urged trading partners, including Mexico, to raise tariffs against China. Experts note the hardest hit will be Chinese and foreign automakers such as BYD and Tesla, whose sales in Mexico had grown rapidly, while U.S. carmakers like General Motors and Ford, operating plants in Mexico, stand to benefit.

Analysts warn the tariff hike could slow Mexico’s electric vehicle market, raise consumer costs, and strain ties with Beijing, a key trade and investment partner. Sheinbaum insists the aim is to “strengthen domestic production,” yet the move adds uncertainty for businesses and heightens geopolitical tensions.
