Mexico and the People's Republic of China (PRC) began diplomatic relations on February 14, 1971, after the rupture of relations between Mexico and the Republic of China (Taiwan), thus, recognizing the PRC before the United Nations. Mexico was the fourth country in Latin America and the Caribbean to establish formal relations with and recognize the Asian country.

Political figures from both countries spoke at the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of these diplomatic relations. One of them was the President of the Board of the Senate of the Republic, Olga Sanchez Cordero, who endorsed the good faith that persists between the two nations. She was joined by the president of the Asia-Pacific-Africa Foreign Relations Commission, Senator Cora Cecilia Pinedo Alonso, who praised the Senate's willingness to continue, strengthen, and transcend the relationship with the People's Republic of China.

On the other hand, the Ambassador of the People's Republic of China in Mexico, Zhu Qingquiao, affirmed that "China is Mexico's second-largest trading partner and Mexico is China's second-largest trading partner in Latin America and the Caribbean." He highlighted that economic and trade cooperation between the parties has increased almost seven thousand times. Finally, the General Director for Europe of the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bernardo Aguilar Calvo, expressed his gratitude for the fraternal relations and collaboration that the People's Republic of China offered Mexico. The National Anthems of Mexico and the PRC were played at the end of the event, launching a photographic exhibition on the 50 years of diplomatic relations between Mexico and the PRC. The exhibition was set up in the Senate's Patio del Federalismo.
