Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum launched the "Mexico Plan," a strategy aimed at reducing reliance on imports from China and boosting domestic production in the context of increasing protectionist policies announced by Donald Trump in the United States.

The plan seeks to raise public and private investment from 25% to 28% of GDP by 2030, with the goal of elevating Mexico from 12th to 10th place among the world's largest economies. Additionally, it aims to encourage the relocation of companies from Asia to Mexico and to increase the national and regional content in industrial supplies.

Sheinbaum highlighted a portfolio of potential investments valued at $277 billion, including projects in sectors such as energy, petrochemicals, electromobility, and semiconductors. These investments are designed to position Mexico as a key player in regional trade.

During the presentation, the president emphasized the importance of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) as a crucial tool to compete with Asia, particularly China. According to Sheinbaum, the USMCA has allowed Mexico to surpass China as the United States' largest trading partner.

The announcement comes amid threats from Donald Trump, who has proposed a 25% tariff on Mexican and Canadian imports as a measure to curb irregular migration and fentanyl trafficking into the United States. This context presents challenges to the plan’s implementation.

The mission of the "Mexico Plan" is to strengthen regional integration, reduce the $80 billion trade deficit with China, and enhance Mexico’s position as a critical hub for production and trade in North America. Sheinbaum is confident that the USMCA and the import substitution strategy will drive the country’s economic development and global competitiveness.
