On the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Mexico and the People's Republic of China, we share the introduction of an article published during the third quarter of 2022 through the China and Latin America Network: Multidisciplinary Approaches (REDCAEM). In this section, the author highlights that, although the relationship between the two countries is not as intense as it is with other countries in the region such as Brazil, Chile, Argentina or Peru, trade between Mexico and China has been on the rise since the beginning of the 21st century. By 2021, the trade relationship reached 110,278.30 million dollars, reaffirming the deficit relationship with that country (Embassy of Mexico in China, 2022). This is why China is currently Mexico's second largest trading partner and the first in the Asia-Pacific region.

In this order of ideas, the research starts with a historical review based on identifying the evolution of this bilateral relationship based on how each of these States has constructed and appropriated institutionalized ideas or concepts that influence the vision of the State and, therefore, the way in which they are linked to the outside world. The international context is added as a determining aspect in the relationship. Taking into account the above, the article proposes four phases/periods in line with four drivers that highlight the protagonism of different interest groups from Mexico. Accordingly, the methodology for this analysis is based on the following formula: “institutionalization + international context = driver + stakeholder.” This formula allows us to review each of these moments in order to draw a series of conclusions about this half-century relationship.
