China is expanding its dominance in Latin America's maritime sector by boosting crane exports and making strategic investments in port infrastructure, strengthening its influence through the Belt and Road Initiative. During the first ten months of 2024, Chinese crane exports to the region rose by 47%, with Peru and Mexico standing out as key destinations, registering growth of up to 193% year-on-year in Mexico.
A notable example is the Chancay mega-port in Peru, which could significantly reduce costs and logistical times in trade between Shanghai and Latin America. Additionally, companies like Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries control 70% of the crane market in the region, consolidating China's role in key port projects in countries like Panama, where crane exports increased by 1,150%.
This expansion is unfolding amid growing tensions with the United States, which has imposed a 25% tariff on Chinese cranes, reducing exports to the U.S. by 66%. Under Donald Trump's administration, stricter measures are expected, including tariffs on Mexican imports and potential blockages of goods originating from Chinese-invested ports, which could negatively affect trade relations with Latin America.
China's prominence in Latin American ports is reshaping global trade, offering significant economic benefits but also raising concerns about excessive dependence. The rivalry between China and the United States adds uncertainty regarding the region's balance of power and the future of global trade. Latin American countries face the challenge of balancing the risks and opportunities of these strategic investments in a constantly shifting geopolitical environment.
