According to a report by Prensa Latina, the ambassador of the People's Republic of China in Honduras expressed his country's commitment to strengthening bilateral trade with the Central American nation, focusing on coffee exports.
Ambassador Yu Bo highlighted that China has an optimal market for purchasing various Honduran products due to their high quality and the increasing demand. He also noted that the Asian nation has the world's second-largest consumer market and a steadily growing middle class interested in acquiring high-quality products, such as Honduran coffee.
For Yu Bo, coffee is the main export product of the Central American country, along with cocoa, tobacco, and shrimp. In this regard, he reported that Chinese authorities are facilitating the entry of Honduran coffee through trade agreements and improvements in sales conditions.
As part of an agreement to expand the presence of Honduran coffee in China, the Central American nation managed to export the first 48 containers in February.
Carlos Murillo, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, confirmed that the transaction benefited 4,600 producers and generated 50,000 indirect jobs. The agreement includes the export of 528 containers, equivalent to 10,000 tons, of which the first shipments included 28,500 quintals of coffee.
Honduras is the largest coffee producer in Central America, and according to estimates from the Honduran Coffee Institute, the country expects to sell 7.2 million quintals, with projected revenues of $2.2 billion, driven by the increase in global demand.
Last but not least, it is worth noting that coffee represents more than 3% of the country's gross domestic product (GDP) and around 30% of the agricultural GDP. Likewise, it is the most important export product of the Central American nation.
