According to the report by the media outlet El Mundo, the Honduran Minister of Energy, Erick Tejada, mentioned that the contract for the construction of a 75 MWh battery energy storage system, valued at $50.2 million, was awarded to the Chinese-Honduran consortium Windey-Equinsa. According to the minister, there were six offers on the table, but this consortium's proposal was the lowest in cost and met all the technical requirements for execution.

Among the other proposals were those from the Amergy consortium, with an offer of $98.6 million; Electric Solar, with $87.3 million; Amarateca (Sinohydro-SEL), with $74.1 million; and Representaciones Mecánico Eléctricas, with $75.8 million.

According to statements from the Minister of Mines, Erick Tejada, the obligations assumed by Windey-Equinsa after being awarded the contract include the study, design, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of the battery energy storage system (BESS), which will be installed at the ENEE substation in Amarateca. Additionally, the minister emphasized that this project will be a pioneer in Central America and will position itself as the largest energy storage system in the region.

This project is expected to begin operations by the end of 2025, allowing energy to be stored during the day and then injected into the grid during peak consumption hours, which usually occur at night. Last but not least, this new technology will mark a significant step in updating and modernizing the Central American country's electrical system, enabling optimal management of the nation's energy matrix.
