Ecuador has recorded a notable rise in its banana exports to China during the first five months of 2025, further strengthening its trade partnership with the Asian giant. According to the Banana Marketing and Export Association (Acorbanec), Ecuador shipped over 1.9 million additional boxes of bananas to China between January and May, a 31.15% increase compared to the same period in 2024.

This growth reflects not only a rebound in Chinese demand but also improvements in logistics, sanitary compliance, and trade mechanisms that have made Ecuadorian bananas more competitive in the Chinese market. Currently, China accounts for 4.53% of Ecuador’s total banana exports, consolidating its position as a key destination in the country's broader export diversification strategy.

The trade boost coincides with the implementation of the Ecuador-China free trade agreement, which came into force in 2024. Under this agreement, several Ecuadorian agricultural goods, including bananas, benefit from reduced tariffs and improved access to the Chinese market.

Acorbanec emphasized that the reinforcement of bilateral commercial relations has helped overcome post-pandemic logistical challenges. New shipping routes, faster customs processes, and adherence to China’s phytosanitary standards have all contributed to the steady export flow.

The surge in exports is also part of a national strategy promoted by both the public and private sectors to increase Ecuador’s footprint in Asian markets. Efforts include participation in trade fairs, targeted promotion campaigns, and stronger relationships with Chinese importers. Ecuadorian bananas are increasingly being marketed in China as premium-quality fruit grown under strict environmental and social standards.

This upward trend comes at a time when European markets are becoming more competitive and showing signs of slowing demand. For Ecuadorian producers, expanding into markets like China provides a crucial buffer and new opportunities for growth.
