Following the visit of Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso to Beijing, both governments (China and Ecuador) began negotiations for a free trade agreement. The visit culminated in a memorandum of understanding signed by the two governments after concluding a joint feasibility study.

In the last two years, China has become Ecuador's second most important trading partner, with trade between the two countries reaching around US$11 billion in 2021. The signing of a free trade agreement will help expand the potential of bilateral trade and its sustained and stable development.
