According to an article by the Cuban News Agency, the public transportation system of the Cuban capital, managed by the Havana Provincial Transportation Company (EPTH), is currently facing difficulties with its bus fleet, which is affecting mobility in the capital of the Caribbean nation.

In this regard, Luis Hernández Pacheco, senior specialist at the Havana Provincial Transportation Company, stated that the current passenger transport capacity of the public system depends specifically on the number of buses available, which is currently limited.

It is worth mentioning that between 2022 and 2023, the average number of citizens transported daily in Havana through the public service exceeded one million, supported by a fleet of 700 buses in optimal condition.

With the aim of solving this issue, the EPTH, in coordination with the Ministry of Transportation, the Evelio Prieto Guillama Bus Manufacturing Company (Caisa), and the provincial government, is developing a project to restore 100 buses in Havana’s public transport system.

This initiative will be carried out through a donation from the People's Republic of China. Regarding the project, Caisa’s general director, Iosvany Frías Álvarez, stated that the restoration of this fleet of 100 buses will involve various parts of the vehicles, including the electrical system, tires, suspension, interiors, paintwork, and other components.

Additionally, Director Frías emphasized that once the mentioned restorations are completed, the company in charge of Havana’s public transportation will be able to resume operations, thereby improving mobility in the city.

For now, Caisa is in charge of receiving the 40 containers with the necessary parts for the restorations, unloading them, and organizing the components, as they were shipped in separate batches.

To carry out the unloading process, an operational system based on an industrial assembly line has been established. In this first phase, parts will be classified to enable the complete restoration of 20 buses by the end of the current year, 2025.

Regarding this restoration process, Caisa’s director noted that it is a preliminary measure to reactivate bus operations as soon as possible. However, she also mentioned that other methods for vehicle repair are being considered.

Last but not least, it is important to point out that the full implementation of the restoration project for Havana’s bus fleet will largely depend on Cuba’s economic situation. For this reason, there is no specific completion date yet.
