Colombia and China have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at promoting cooperation in railway infrastructure development. The signing took place in Bogotá during a visit by a Chinese technical delegation, led by the Director of the NDRC’s Department of International Cooperation. The delegation held meetings with representatives from the Colombian Ministries of Transport, Finance, and Commerce, as well as the National Infrastructure Agency (ANI), the National Roads Institute (Invías), and ProColombia.
According to the Ministry of Transport, the MoU opens the door for technical cooperation, financing opportunities, and Chinese business participation in the design, construction, and operation of railway projects - seen as vital to boosting Colombia’s logistics competitiveness and advancing a more sustainable transport system.
Transport Minister María Constanza García highlighted the importance of such partnerships to diversify funding sources and leverage international expertise in large-scale infrastructure. The NDRC expressed its interest in identifying specific opportunities through joint studies and technical missions.
In recent years, China has expanded its presence in Latin America's infrastructure sector through investments and participation in transport, energy, and telecommunications projects. In Colombia, this cooperation could take shape in key initiatives such as the Pacific railway network, the Bogotá logistics corridor, and the modernization of existing rail lines.
