Academics from Chile and China are collaborating to combat drought by using advanced agricultural technology, including satellites, drones, and artificial intelligence. Led by the University of Talca in Chile and China Agricultural University, the project aims to digitize the agricultural sector and optimize water use in crops through innovative methods. This partnership enables precise monitoring and calculation of water consumption in crops in both countries, achieving up to 50% savings.
The study, conducted by the Research and Transfer Center for Irrigation and Agroclimatology (CITRA) in Chile and the College of Water Resources & Civil Engineering at CAU in China, seeks to implement affordable solutions for farmers, especially in Chile's main fruit-growing regions. Using these technological tools, farmers can determine the timing and quantity of irrigation based on specific plant needs.
The initiative also focuses on developing skilled human capital to address climate change, involving students at various levels. This international cooperation strengthens academic and professional networks, enabling Chile to benefit from knowledge exchange with China amid an extreme drought that has impacted the country for 15 years and is further exacerbated by phenomena like La Niña, prolonging the water crisis.
