According to a report by La República, following the tariffs imposed by the People's Republic of China on various U.S. products, including soybeans, Brazilian exports of this commodity are expected to benefit.
This analysis, conducted by the consulting firm Cogo Inteligência em Agronegócio, comes after the Asian country announced additional tariffs of 15% on chicken, corn, cotton, and wheat, as well as 10% on soybeans, vegetables, pork, and beef from the United States, starting March 10.
Furthermore, amid this dispute, the People's Republic of China has suspended soybean import licenses for three U.S. companies in response to the 10% tariffs imposed by President Trump on various Chinese products. Due to this factor, China is expected to increase its interest in Brazilian soybeans to reduce imports of this product from the United States.
It is worth noting that, to date, the People's Republic of China sources approximately 75% of its imported soybeans from Brazil. This trend can be traced back to the first term of Donald Trump when another trade dispute led China to turn to Brazil to meet its soybean demand.
Regarding corn, according to director Carlos Cogo, China does not rely on U.S. grain. However, the 15% tariff could reduce Chinese demand and prompt the Asian country to diversify its suppliers of this product, which could benefit both Brazil and Argentina.
Last but not least, it is important to mention that China is the largest market for U.S. agricultural products. Therefore, the tariffs announced in March 2025 will impact agricultural and food products worth 21 billion dollars from the North American country.
