Bolivia and China are deepening their bilateral relationship through an agenda that covers strategic topics such as the export of Bolivian products to the Chinese market, investments in the lithium sector, and participation in the BRICS bloc.

Following a high-level meeting in Bolivia, led by President Luis Arce and China’s International Trade Representative Wang Shouwen, the two nations solidified a series of agreements aimed at strengthening economic cooperation and opening new opportunities for the Bolivian economy during challenging national times.

In addition to trade issues, technical cooperation between the two countries has been significant. China has donated equipment valued at approximately $14.5 million to Bolivia for border control, reinforcing national security and demonstrating its commitment to developing strategic infrastructure.

Under the framework of the ‘Political Consultations Mechanism,’ they also discussed agreements in science, technology, and renewable energy, with the goal of developing joint initiatives to boost mutual progress in these fields.

Trade relations between Bolivia and China have reached record numbers, reflected in a Bolivian trade surplus of $328 million in 2023. Bilateral trade totaled $2.596 billion, with Bolivian exports including agricultural products and strategic resources like lithium, as well as a significant volume of Chinese imported goods.

Both nations are preparing to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2025, aiming to expand cooperation in trade and multilateral forums.
