Argentine President Alberto Fernandez recently presented his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping with a formal request to join the BRICS group, as announced by Sabino Vaca Narvaja, Argentina's ambassador to the People's Republic of China. The group, which gets its name from its member economies (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) represents almost 40% and 25% of the world's GDP. Given these dimensions, joining the BRICS is a great opportunity for Argentina's development. The BRICS members are also interested in granting Argentina's entry into the group.

According to Alejandro Karnel, Argentina's inclusion reinforces the member countries' and the South American country's interest in forming a counter-hegemonic economic group. Given the current international context, especially taking into account the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, it is a rational decision for Argentina to break its dependence on the traditional powers and find more stable alternatives. On the other hand, Argentina is a country that has a great productive capacity of first quality food, and has a great projection for the development of clean energies, especially through its lithium reserves. This projection resonates with the interests of China, the leading country of the BRICS group.
