The BRICS group of emerging economies held its annual summit the week beginning June 20 amidst a tense global scenario triggered by the war in Ukraine. The event brought together leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, the People's Republic of China (PRC), and South Africa in a online meeting because of the pandemic. The Argentine government was a special guest at the meeting and once again expressed its interest in participating in the group.

Last May, Alberto Fernandez, President of Argentina, sent a letter to the group in which he highlighted the "alternative of cooperating in the face of a world order that has been working for the benefit of a few" and emphasized that Argentina's interests are aligned with those of the bloc. This interest is not new; it has been officially expressed since 2015, first by former President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner and then by former President Mauricio Macri.
