Chinese mining company Zijin will invest US$380 million through its subsidiary Liex to build a lithium carbonate plant in the province of Catamarca (Argentina).
In a meeting attended by the Argentinean Minister of Productive Development, Matías Kulfas, and the Governor of Catamarca, Raúl Jali, representatives of the Chinese company announced that the plant will be built in the Tres Quebradas deposit, located 170 kilometers from the town of Fiambalá (Catamarca). The minister informed that this project will create more than 1,000 direct and indirect jobs in the region. The Tres Quebradas mining project is located 30 kilometers from the border with Chile and is 4,200 meters above sea level. In the first stage, this initiative is projected to produce 20,000 tons of lithium carbonate per year, with a view to doubling this amount in the medium term. The deposit is expected to start producing by the end of 2023 and will have a lifespan of about 50 years.
