The People’s Republic of China officially inaugurated its new embassy in Managua on Wednesday, in a ceremony that reaffirms the growing diplomatic and cooperative relationship with Nicaragua. The event was led by Chinese Ambassador Chen Xi and Nicaraguan officials, who emphasized the importance of the new facility as a symbol of an increasingly close partnership.
Ambassador Chen recalled that the provisional diplomatic mission was established just three weeks after diplomatic relations were reestablished on December 10, 2021. The new embassy, he noted, reflects the steady progress of a “fruitful friendship and cooperation” across multiple sectors.
Laureano Ortega Murillo, presidential adviser and coordinator for relations with China, thanked the Chinese government for its continued support and viewed the embassy opening as a concrete step in advancing the strategic partnership between the two countries. Since resuming ties, China and Nicaragua have expanded cooperation in infrastructure, energy, health, education, telecommunications, the environment, and trade. According to Ambassador Chen, the new facility will enhance the coordination of joint initiatives and contribute to Nicaragua’s socioeconomic development.
Diplomatic relations between China and Nicaragua were initially established in 1985, suspended in 1990, and officially restored in 2021 following Nicaragua’s decision to cut ties with Taiwan.
