According to an article by the outlet Infoqom, the airline of the People’s Republic of China, China Eastern Airlines, announced that in December 2025 the first direct flight between Buenos Aires and Shanghai will be established.
This new transcontinental corridor will operate twice a week and will include a technical stop on each journey in the city of Auckland, New Zealand. The route is expected to enhance connectivity between Argentina and the People’s Republic of China and also contribute to a South-South intercontinental linkage.
According to the specialized portal Aviacionline, the route will be operated with Boeing 777 aircraft and will become the first regular air connection between Argentina and China. The service will be named the “Southern Corridor,” as reported by the airline itself.
Currently, there is no direct commercial route between the two countries. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, some Argentine airlines operated special flights to transport vaccines.
The signing ceremony for the agreement establishing this air corridor took place in Auckland on June 18, 2025. The event was attended by the president of China Eastern Airlines, Wang Zhiqing, and the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Christopher Luxon.
This agreement is expected to boost strategic cooperation in the economic and tourism sectors, thanks to the ease of making direct trips to both Shanghai and Auckland from the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires.
In addition to improved connectivity, one of the key factors in making the route viable was the New Zealand government’s decision to waive transit visa requirements for Chinese citizens passing through the country.
Along the same lines, as a result of the China–CELAC Forum 2025, the People’s Republic of China implemented a 30-day tourist visa exemption for citizens of five Latin American countries, including Argentina, which also supported the establishment of the new route.
Last but not least, this new air connection is expected to strengthen tourism among the three involved nations, contributing to the development of the sector thanks to the possibility of direct flights to Shanghai with a technical stop in Auckland.
